Weather Outfit Slider: What to Wear at Any Temp

Temperature alone does not tell you what to wear. Wind chill, humidity, and whether you will be moving or standing still all change the real-feel temperature by 10-15 degrees. This slider gives you a baseline outfit for any temperature, then lets you adjust based on your actual conditions.

The Five Temperature Zones

  • Under 30°F (Heavy Winter): Thermal base layers, insulated coat, scarf, gloves, insulated boots. Layering is mandatory, a single heavy piece leaves you either overheating indoors or freezing outdoors.
  • 30-45°F (Cool Breeze): Sweaters, light wool coats, denim, ankle boots. This is where most fall and early spring days live in the northern US.
  • 45-65°F (Transitional): Cardigans, long-sleeve blouses, midi skirts, loafers. The hardest zone to dress for because mornings are cold and afternoons are warm. Layering with removable pieces is the solution.
  • 65-80°F (Warm & Sunny): T-shirts, linen trousers, sundresses, sandals. Breathable fabrics matter more than coverage here.
  • 80°F+ (Scorching Heat): Tank tops, shorts, loose weaves, UV protection. Fabric weight under 120 GSM becomes essential.

The Variables This Slider Cannot See

Humidity changes everything. 75°F in Phoenix feels different than 75°F in Atlanta. If humidity exceeds 60%, drop one layer from the slider’s recommendation and prioritize moisture-wicking fabrics like merino wool or linen blends. Wind chill below 20°F requires a shell layer regardless of the base temperature.

Our hot-weather fabric guide covers the specific GSM weights that work in each zone, and our summer-to-fall transition guide covers the layering combinations that handle the 45-65°F swing without requiring a second wardrobe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear in 60 degree weather?

A long-sleeve top with a removable cardigan or light jacket. Mornings will feel cool; afternoons will feel warm.

How do you dress for 40 to 50 degree weather?

Two layers minimum: a base layer plus a sweater or light coat. Add a scarf if wind exceeds 10 mph.

Is there an app that tells you what to wear today?

Several exist, but most require location permissions and send your data to servers. This slider runs entirely in your browser.

What is the 20 degree rule for running clothes?

Dress for 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. Your body heat while running makes up the difference.

Does wind chill affect what you should wear?

Yes. Wind chill below 20°F requires a windproof shell regardless of the base temperature reading.

What do you wear in 70 degree weather?

A short-sleeve or long-sleeve top with light bottoms. Skip outerwear unless you will be stationary for more than 30 minutes.
